Everyone knows lavender: the little sprigs, the short flowers and the distinctive scent. So what better way to make the most of summer than to take a trip to the place where the magic happens.
Where is the Valensole plateau?
Valensole, located in the Verdon Regional Nature Park, is a commune whose Latin name Vallis Solis means “the valley of the sun“. A perfect environment for growing lavender, which needs sunshine to flourish. The ideal time to enjoy it is between 15 June and 15 July, when you can admire the fields in flower before they are harvested or dried.
The Valensole plateau: stage for the lavender festival
You can also stay nearby for the Lavender Festival on the 3rd Sunday in July. Attended by many visitors every summer, this traditional festival brings together a whole list of activities designed to help you discover its special guest: visits to distilleries and lavender fields, hand-cutting demonstrations, horse-drawn carriage rides, a local market and a parade of washerwomen!
Green fact about lavender
But lavender is also a melliferous plant, i.e. much sought-after by bees. And therefore an essential source of honey for these little workers.
It’s an opportunity to discover all the uses you can make of this small, discreet flower with its bewitching violet colour and fragrance. All the while respecting nature and local producers.
