Madeira is a small archipelago belonging to Portugal located in the Atlantic Ocean. The main island of the same name has the particularity of being very lush with greenery compared to other volcanic islands. Its year-round mild climate is home to an abundant and varied flora.
Their well-known Festival
Every year, this year exceptionally in October, is when the Flower Festival takes place. Spread over three weeks, it celebrates the metamorphosis, the rebirth, and the abundance of flowers that colour and perfume the island.
This cultural event is an opportunity to discover the many floral and decorative species that exist at its unmissable flower market. The sweet smell of flowers is accompanied by the local cuisine, where you can enjoy regional dishes.
Madeira’s flower traditions
The streets of Funchal, the capital city, are adorned with numerous flower displays. These traditional, intricately detailed creations have their origins in the decorations on religious procession routes.
If you feel like getting hands-on, workshops and exhibitions are available in Praça do Povo where the floral compositions on display are judged and awarded by a panel of experts.
The parade of floral floats
Finally, how can we not mention its parade of floral floats. Dancers and music groups escort the participants, dressed in outfits entirely covered with colourful bouquets.
Flowers at the heart of the event
Without forgetting the construction of floral murals, concerts, folkloric dances or even fashion shows: The Madeira Flower Festival is a unique experience for the senses. Filled with music, colours and aromas, it definitely has something to encourage your creativity joyfully.
